A Victory for Every Child: How My Helping Hand Foundation Advocated for Free Education in Zambia

The signing of the Free Education Bill into law by by president Hakainde Hichilema marks a historic turning point in Zambia's education sector. For many, it is a policy achievement. For us at My Helping Hand Foundation it is the realization of a dream we have tirelessly championed for years a dream that every child, regardless of their economic background, deserves access to education.

As a Founder My Helping Hand Foundation, I have witnessed firsthand the heartbreaking reality faced by children from underprivileged communities. Many bright and talented children have been forced out of school simply because their families could not afford school fees and other educational costs. The cycle of poverty continued not because these children lacked potential, but because opportunity was beyond their reach.

Recognizing this challenge, our foundation made education advocacy one of its core priorities. Through community engagements, stakeholder consultations, youth empowerment initiatives, and direct support to vulnerable children, we consistently raised awareness about the importance of making education accessible to all. We engaged local leaders, parents, community members, civil society organizations, and government institutions, emphasizing that education should not be a privilege for a few but a fundamental right for every child.

The journey was not easy. There were countless meetings, policy discussions, community outreach programs, and advocacy campaigns. We spoke on platforms where few listened, and we continued advocating even when progress seemed slow. We shared stories of children whose futures hung in the balance because of financial barriers. We mobilized communities to recognize education as the strongest weapon against poverty, unemployment, crime, and social inequality.

Today, seeing free education protected by law is deeply rewarding. This legislation means that access to education is no longer dependent on changing policies or political circumstances. It becomes a legal right that future generations can depend upon. For children from vulnerable and disadvantaged backgrounds, this law opens doors that were previously closed.

This milestone is not only a victory for government policy; it is a victory for every parent who struggled to keep a child in school, every teacher who believed in their learners, every civil society organization that advocated for educational reforms, and every child who refused to give up on their dreams despite difficult circumstances.

At My Helping Hand Foundation, we celebrate this achievement with humility and gratitude. While much work remains to ensure effective implementation, infrastructure development, learning quality, and educational support services, today we pause to acknowledge that a significant step has been taken.

The Free Education Act represents hope. It represents dignity. It represents equal opportunity.

Most importantly, it represents a future where a child's destiny is determined by their potential and hard work not by the size of their parents' income.

As a foundation, we remain committed to supporting government efforts, advocating for educational quality, and ensuring that no child is left behind. This is a victory worth celebrating, and it strengthens our resolve to continue fighting for the rights and welfare of Zambia's children.

The dream of free education has moved from advocacy to reality. For My Helping Hand Foundation, this is more than a policy success it is a testament that persistent advocacy can change lives and shape the future of a nation.
